Meet your trainer: Sarah

After graduating from UBC in 2008, I worked in different settings as a weight room supervisor and taught a variety of classing including outdoor fitness, aerobics, strength, stretch, and core classes. I spent 4 years working as a personal trainer with a wide variety of clients in a private studio in North Vancouver. After having my first baby and moving to Abbotsford in 2015, I worked at the ARC (weight room supervisor/personal trainer/fitness instructor) while also starting up Right Moves Fitness as a location in Jan 2017. We moved to our current location in Jan 2021.

The Right Moves Fitness Experience:

You can expect to leave feeling like you’ve had a great workout and knowing that you did exercises properly.  You’ll be getting a good return for the time you put it.  Within a few weeks you will notice improved skills as new movements because more familiar.  Within a few months you will feel a noticeable increase in overall strength and fitness.  As you progress, the exercises may become more advanced and the weight you lift heavier, so your body will always be challenged, and you can continue to see improvements long term.  I focus on starting with where you are at and making small, continued progress over the long term.  This allows results with as little “pain” as possible.  I remind participants in my circuit-based classes to “work at the level that is right for you”.  Taking it at the appropriate intensity, you’re likely to actually enjoy working out and stick with it long enough that it becomes part of your lifestyle.  My private non-intimidating home-based setting is enjoyed by those that do not want to go to your typical gym.

Fitness Values:

I am grateful to have a healthy body that I can move in different ways.  I see exercise as a privilege and want to keep my body healthy and strong as I age.

I value fitness as a means to improve and maintain many aspects of one’s health.  It is for everyone.  You don’t need to look a certain way or have preexisting skills.  I want my clients to view their workouts as a form of self-care, not a punishment.

My approach to increasing fitness is more about “work out smarter, not harder” vs “no pain, no gain”.  I’m all about gradual progression for continued results. Making the most of every workout with all the “Right Moves”.  I’m also big on variety; my clients never complain about getting bored because no 2 workouts are ever the same.  Over time, my clients realize the benefits of an active lifestyle in ways they may not have anticipated.

I love watching women in my small group classes support each other.  It is such a great environment for all.  When someone comes in as a beginner, they are welcomed, encouraged and motivated by seeing what some of the other ladies can do.

More About Me:

As a mom of 2 busy young boys, I know the challenges of juggling many demands and feeling like there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done.

I have experience recovering from a vaginal birth as well as an emergency C-Section.  I’ve done my own core rehab twice as well as rehab from shoulder and feet/ankle issues.  I refer clients to physio as needed and work with them to find the best exercises to help recover and/or work within any current limitations. I enjoy that I am always learning for and from my clients.

I enjoy being able to workout at home but also love getting outside to run and taking an occasional fitness or yoga class.

Education:

I have a Bachelor’s of Human Kinetics (BHKIN) in Health and Fitness with a minor in Psychology from UBC.  I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor through the BCRPA with special certifications in Third Age (senior fitness) and Pre/Post Natal Fitness.  I have been working in the fitness industry since 2007.
